Evonik Antwerp and local residents in Lillo join forces during Port Clean Up

As part of the annual Port Clean Up initiative organised by Port of Antwerp-Bruges, Evonik Antwerp is organising a clean-up campaign on Wednesday 24 September in the immediate vicinity of its site and in and around the picturesque village of Lillo. This campaign is part of Evonik's broader ambition to actively contribute to a clean and liveable environment as a port company, in close collaboration with local residents and partners.

The initiative is supported by strong local roots: Nicole Nijs, representative of the Lillo residents' group and member of the neighbourhood council, acts as spokesperson for the community: "As residents of Lillo, we value our village greatly and are keen to contribute to a clean and pleasant living environment. The collaboration with Evonik and the district shows that together we can make a positive contribution. Hopefully, many neighbours will join this initiative." Together with Evonik and with the valued support of the district, this clean-up campaign is setting an example of good neighbourliness and social engagement. Zander Vliegen, district mayor of the Berendrecht-Zandvliet-Lillo district, is also very committed: ‘Initiatives such as this show how strong the bond between businesses, residents and the district can be. A clean neighbourhood is a shared responsibility, and I am delighted that we as a district can support and promote this campaign.’

All are welcome

The clean-up campaign is open to all residents of Lillo or the district, but other organisations, associations and volunteer groups are also invited to participate. Willy Ibens, chairman of Natuurpunt Antwerpen Noord en Kempen vzw, is enthusiastic about this initiative: ‘Nature and cleanliness go hand in hand. By cleaning up together, we are not only protecting the landscape around Lillo, but also the biodiversity that lives there.’ Other interested parties can register via the district or directly with Evonik Antwerp and make a difference together. ‘A clean neighbourhood is something we all enjoy,’ says Ivan Pelgrims, managing director of Evonik Antwerp. ‘With this campaign, we want to show that social responsibility and community involvement are not just empty words, but concrete actions.’
